Listed
below is a sample of projects completed by the Principal:
Construction Job Site Visits:
Problem: A General Contractor reduced their safety salaried position and
gave the responsibility to the Job Superintendents. The General Contractor
wanted to ensure that safety was being addressed.
Solution: The Job Sites are regularly visited to check compliance with
contractor and OSHA requirements. Digital photos are taken of safe and
unsafe actions and conditions on the sites. The report is given to the Job
Superintendent and the General Contractor.
Results: The General Contractor has saved over 60% of the salary costs and
has a higher level of service. Job Site visits has raised the
awareness level for employees and Job Superintendents. The Job Site safety
has improved by increasing safe conditions and actions.
Ergonomic Improvement and Cost Reduction:
Problem:
Manufacturing low margin industry required cost reduction projects and
injury reduction projects. One labor intensive operation had the highest
injury rate of one per quarter. The operation was an unloading, cleaning,
and loading operation.
Solution: The operation was analyzed to document the wasted time and
motion. Solutions were developed in cooperation with the operators and
maintenance department. Prototypes were developed, and workstation changes
of $ 8,000 were implemented.
Results: The operation labor was reduced 6 Full Time Employees
(FTE’s). (A reduction from 18 FTE’s to 12 FTE’s.) Injuries and injury risks
were eliminated. An annual labor cost reduction of $200,000 was successful.
Interim Services SHE
Manager:
Problem: A large
manufacturing operation required Safety, Health, and Environmental Manager
services to prepare for a corporate audit and improve the SHE program, while
a candidate search to find a permanent replacement was being conducted.
Solution: A Safety, Health, and Environmental Manual meeting
Corporate, OSHA, and EPA requirements was Developed. Management was trained
in the updated manual. Corrective action was identified and implemented
prior to the Corporate audit.
Results: An excellent Corporate Audit score based on proper
documentation, training, and prioritized corrective action. The Corporate
Audit score was improved 50% of the available points, over the previous
year. The Plant Manager’s bonus objective was met, and OSHA and EPA audit
preparation was improved.
Safety Program Development, Contractor:
Problem:
A small contractor in California needed an Injury, Illness, and Prevention
Program (IIPP) to meet OSHA and Workers Compensation carrier requirements.
They also needed to provide weekly safety talks to their employees to meet
their contractor license requirements.
Solution: Developed a customized IIPP for their business along with
“Toolbox Talks” for presentation to their employees.
Results: Successful implementation of IIPP, OSHA, Workers
Compensation, and Contractor Licensing Board requirements.
Pollution Prevention Plan and Waste Reduction:
Problem: A
mid-size manufacturing company required a Pollution Prevention Plan (PPP) to
meet State and Federal Hazardous Waste Pollution Prevention Plan
requirements. They also wanted to reduce the cost of disposal for the waste.
Solution: A Pollution Prevention Plan was developed with the
operations and engineering departments input. Waste streams were identified
and characterized. Process changes, waste reduction methods, and training
recommendations were identified and implemented. Waste contractors were
contacted to provide competitive pricing.
Results: A 30% reduction in hazardous waste and a 35% reduction in
disposal costs were realized by implementing the Pollution Prevention Plan.
Government requirements were also met.
Workers' Compensation Cost Reduction:
Problem: Rising
workers' compensation policy costs. An OSHA Recordable accident frequency
rate above industry standards.
Solution: Evaluated workers' compensation program. Implemented safety
improvement effort resulting in a decrease in OSHA Recordable accidents of
30% in one year.
Results: A decrease in the OSHA Recordable Rate to better than the
Industry average. A decrease in Workers' Compensation policy and indirect
costs of 20%.
Quality and Environmental ISO System:
Problem: A
start-up manufacturer required an ISO 9001 Quality compliant management
system and an ISO 14001 compliant environmental system to conduct business
with new potential customers.
Solution: Evaluated the baseline systems in a Gap analysis. Generated
an action plan and assisted with implementation of the plan. Put together a
Quality and Procedure Manual to support the facility activities and meet the
ISO Documentation requirements. Conducted employee training and prepared the
facility for the customer audit.
Results: The client passed the customer audit and maintained an ISO
9001 and ISO 14001 compliant management system.
OSHA Citation:
Problem: A
serious electrical workplace injury occurred at a manufacturing facility. An
OSHA inspection of the facility had taken place, and citations were pending.
Solution: Worked with client and OSHA to correct the violations and
protect employees adequately against the electrical hazard. Procedure
changes and training took place. Documentation was supplied to OSHA. Worked
with OSHA to reduce the citation from “Serious” to “Other-Than-Serious”.
Results: An “Other-Than-Serious” violation was issued for a few
hundred dollars. Serious citations carry a penalty of up to $ 7,000 per
violation. |
